AN arson attack destroyed a timber building and a portable toilet at Castle Hill.

It is thought that some kind of flammable liquid was used to set the structure on fire on Sunday evening.

Luckily, due to recent rainfall, the Almondbury landmark was spared a grass fire that could have started as a result.

The compound was constructed a few years ago as part of the enhancement works to cater for litter collection.

It has had subsequent other uses which has included the provision of a portable loo for staff who are on duty when Victoria Tower is open and for volunteers undertaking practical conservation work.

The crime has been reported to West Yorkshire Police who are making investigations.

If anyone saw anything suspicious they are urged to contact the police or Julian Brown, Castle Hill Ranger, on 0796 8426 312.
