A HUGE blaze which tore through a three-storey mill was started deliberately.

Police investigating the inferno at the empty mill on Bradford Road in Batley say it is being treated as arson.

They have appealed for witnesses to the fire, which ripped through the mill early on Saturday morning.

The flames were spotted at 1.50am and the first firefighters to arrive immediately called for back-up.

The fire in the mill next to Dream World bed factory had taken hold.

Crews were sent from Dewsbury, Morley and Ossett to help the Batley crew.

The gable end is now dangerous and at least part of the building may have to be demolished.

Batley Watch Manager Barry Shevill said: “It was a severe fire and the building suffered severe damage.

“The fire had gone all the way through the roof and down to the first floor as well. The ground floor suffered water damage.”
