AN arsonist started three fires within minutes of each other in one small area of Huddersfield.

Police are investigating after the incidents in Lockwood in the early hours of yesterday.

The first fire was started at around 2.40am when a wheeled bin was set alight at Yews Hill Road.

A second blaze was reported behind a house at nearby North Street shortly afterwards. It is believed some rubbish was set alight.

And a third fire was then reported round the corner at Lime Street.

Crews from Huddersfield Fire Station spent around two hours at the scenes of the blazes.

Watch commander Chris Bell urged residents to help prevent arson attacks.

He said: “We would ask people to be vigilant and to make sure they don’t leave rubbish lying around.”

Firefighters leafleted the area after the blazes to warn people what was happening.

Watch commander Bell added: “If people would like a home safety check then we can carry one out for them.”
