ARSONISTS are believed to blame for a blaze which badly damaged the changing rooms at Paddock Cricket Club.

The rooms and score box off West View Rise were found burning fiercely at about 1.20am today.

And the inferno followed a spate of fires in the Paddock area late last night where bins were set on fire.

Station Officer Tony Bateman, of Huddersfield fire station, said: "It looked like someone had broken into a storeroom and set it on fire.

"The flames spread to the changing rooms and scorebox."

The arsonists had also set fire to a garage next to the changing rooms, but the fire inside there was confined to gardening equipment.

The main clubhouse which has the function room and bar is at the other side of the ground and was completely unaffected.

Paddock Cricket Club secretary Peter Booth said: "We had a bonfire at the club last night and everything was all right when we left at about 11.20pm.

"I then got a call from the fire service in the early hours of the morning."

He said a new roof had been put on the changing rooms about a year ago - but that had held firm against the flames which were contained within the building.
