A SERIAL arsonist has struck in the Paddock and Thornton Lodge areas.

The firebug first stacked rubbish up against the side of a building and set it alight before going on to torch a settee and a couple of skips.

Police are now probing the fires and appealed for information.

The most serious incident was the first, when rubbish and a wheeled bin were put against the side of Continental Sports at Birkhouse Lane, Paddock Foot, at 4.40am yesterday.

The fire spread to the building’s corrugated cladding and firefighters had to remove one panel to make sure it had not spread underneath and into the building.

Luckily it was confined to the outside of the firm, which makes gymnastics equipment.

Crew Manager Dave Chadwick, of Huddersfield fire station, said: “While we were dealing with this incident we noticed a plume of smoke above us on Manchester Road and alerted another appliance.’’

This crew discovered a settee on fire at Manchester Road, Thornton Lodge and then two skips blazing on a back alley at the Blackmoorfoot Road, Crosland Moor Bottom.

Anyone with information should contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
