A NEW underground gallery opens at Yorkshire Sculpture Park next month.

The £3.5m gallery is being officially opened on May 14, during Museums and Galleries Month.

It marks the culmination of £13m expenditure over the last three years and is one of the largest purpose-built gallery spaces created in Britain in recent years.

The gallery opens with a major retrospective of work by William Turnbull.

Peter Murray, the park's executive director, said: "The addition of this superb new gallery to our 500 acres of outdoor gallery space presents a unique opportunity for visitors to interact and engage with works of art.

"It denotes Yorkshire Sculpture Park as one of the world's largest centres dedicated to the display of modern and contemporary art."

The new building's three large gallery spaces cover 700 square yards.

Cash for the scheme came from the European Union's Regional Development Fund, the Yorkshire Forward regenera- tion agency and Wakefield Council.

The Turnbull exhibition is sponsored by the Manchester Airport Group.
