Yorkshire’s most famous watercolour artist Ashley Jackson is aiming to capture a changing landscape – without his trademark brushes and paint.

His new project Framing the Landscape in partnership with the National Trust and Walker Morris aims to create a permanent, ever-changing outside art exhibition.

The idea is to construct a permanent, freestanding, oversized metal picture frame with the University of Huddersfield which will be installed at Wessenden Head, Marsden Moor.

The landscape of Yorkshire is firmly placed in the frame allowing visitors to gain a greater understanding of the surrounding landscape and an artist’s viewpoint. Ashley also hopes to engage with schools and young children in order for it to become a significant reference point in protecting the Yorkshire heritage for future generations.

Referring to his quotation as a young man in his 30s “many people look but only a few see” he says he wants to re-engage local communities.

He wants them and visitors to the county to be able to ‘see’ how great the landscape is and value its worth as an art gallery that is free for everyone to enjoy.

Wessenden Head is the first location of a number of frames to be installed throughout Yorkshire highlighting the many unique and dynamic panoramas available to us all.

Constructed from steel the frame will weather with the elements and become part of its natural surroundings.

Joining Ashley at Wessenden yesterday were a group of children who he introduced to the notion of learning about the landscape outside of the classroom environment with pencils and paper at the ready. Their sketches were then uploaded to the Framing the Landscape website gallery section for others to view.
