A YOUNG artist from Huddersfield is hoping to receive national acclaim after being selected as a finalist in a contemporary drawing competition.

Ben Weeks is among only 23 artists to make it through to the final of Pizza- Express Prospects 2004.

More than 1,000 artists entered the contest in a bid to win the top £10,000 prize.

Ben, 23, who is originally from Toronto, Canada, but is studying for an MA at Huddersfield University said: "The artwork represents the juxtaposition between nature and music.

"The main image is created using screen print on wood."

The art prize was established to recognise the talents of both emerging and established artists and to promote drawing under its widest definition.

Ben's submitted work, entitled Ink on Carpet, is an image of a squirrel playing a drum set.

The artwork was created using wood, stain, paper and screen print.

If Ben is chosen as the overall winner he plans to use the award to further his art career in the UK.

In addition to the £10,000 award, a special prize of £2,000 will be awarded to a final year art student.

The winner of the competition will be announced later this month.
