A MAN caught with a baseball bat during a 3am scuffle has been spared jail.

Craig Beggs, 25, of Wood Lane, Ashenhurst, was captured on CCTV with the bat outside Mymou bar, Queen Street, on December 27.

Bradford Crown Court yesterday watched a video of Beggs jumping out of a car and pushing another man while holding the bat in his other hand.

He is seen to run off before dumping the weapon and his jacket.

Beggs, who runs his mother’s business, was yesterday given a 12-month community order with 80 hours unpaid work plus £500 costs.

Sentencing Judge Julian Smith said Beggs was a hard-working man who had acted out of character.

Judge Smith said: “It’s hard to imagine what was going through your mind when you got out of the car and approached those people standing outside that club.

“In those circumstances it is the experience of this court that people are hurt, sometimes severely.

“You appeared to have thought better of your actions and got away. That makes this unusual and less serious.

“It is apparent your behaviour was out of character and that stands in your favour.”
