A man who kept a bullet he found because he thought it looked “cool” had no idea that it was prohibited ammunition, a court heard.

Ashley George, of Lockbridge Way in Milnsbridge, pleaded guilty to possessing the .22 rifle rimfire cartridge.

He also admitted possessing cocaine at the hearing at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.

George was caught buying the class A drug by a police officer on patrol in Crosland Moor on August 31.

Alex Bozman, prosecuting, said that he witnessed the 23-year-old and two other males talking together.

The men ran off when they saw him but George was detained by one of the officer’s colleagues.

On the floor behind him was a plastic bag filled with white powder.

Another bag, which also contained cocaine, was found a short distance away and George was arrested.

The unfired cartridge, an expanding ammunition which is prohibited, was found amongst his personal property at the police station.

Mr Bozman said: “He said he found the bullet on the floor, thought it was from an air rifle and formed the impression it was ok to have it.

“He said he kept it because it looked cool.”

George also admitted that he paid £100 for one of the bags of cocaine but got the other bag on ‘tick’.

Mr Bozman said that the drugs were worth and estimated £380 and that the bags contained nine-and-a-half street deals.

Mike Sisson-Pell, mitigating, said that his client didn’t realise that the bullet was prohibited.

He said: “It’s the least lethal of any ammunition on the market, usually used for killing rabbits.

“He picked it up, put it in his pocket and it would have been no danger to anybody.”

Mr Sisson-Pell added that George has acquired a significant cocaine habit over the last few months.

He told magistrates that his personal circumstances, including looking after his terminally ill uncle, have led to this.

Magistrates adjourned sentencing until May 1 so that a full report on George can be completed.
