THE seat of power in Huddersfield has been condemned as "dirty and dingy".
The scathing attack on the Kirklees Council chamber in Huddersfield Town Hall was made by the town's Labour MP Barry Sheerman.
He has called on civic leaders to show some Pride in Huddersfield and give the chamber a much- needed makeover.
Mr Sheerman said he was horrified when he called at the town hall with a party of visitors from Canada.
He said: "Some of the seats are falling apart, the remainder are very dirty and the carpet is held together with bits of tape.
"The visitors were from a provincial government office in Canada and they were disgusted - as was I - with the state of our local government centre.
"They could not believe how scruffy it was, particularly in a town hall as impressive as the one in Huddersfield.
"We have to show some Pride in Huddersfield and I will be calling on Kirklees Council leader Clr Kath Pinnock to invest in a makeover for the chamber."
Clr John Smithson, deputy leader of the council, said: "We are obviously aware of the condition of the council chamber and all our public buildings.
"We do have plans to look at overall improvements to the town hall, primarily to the parts that are well used by the public and local organisations. But plans will include the council chamber as well," he added.
"The improvements are in the sense of improving the town hall for much wider events than just council meetings, which is the main use of the council chamber .
"They are very much in the preparation stage and will not be looked at in detail until the summer at the earliest.
"It is a matter of getting our priorities right," said Clr Smithson. "We have public service priorities which come before re- furbishing the council chamber."
