HUDDERSFIELD'S MP has attacked telecoms giant BT over fears that 2,200 jobs will be shifted to India.

Labour's Barry Sheerman joined activists when they brought a huge inflatable pink elephant to Harrogate as part of their campaign.

The Communication Workers' Union is protesting against the "stampede" of call centre jobs overseas.

Mr Sheerman said: "Workers all over West Yorkshire have already lost their jobs with BT and its 02 offshoot through outsourcing and divestment.

"Each job lost is a blow to the individual affected, the local economy and the taxpayer."

Mr Sheerman added: "It is vital that organisations such as BT recognise the importance of continued investment in local areas.

"They must stop the stampede of jobs out of the regions in which the companies have been nurtured."
