FIREFIGHTERS in West Yorkshire suffered 75 attacks at the hands of yobs between April and December last year.

They included 16 missile attacks, 11 ‘stonings’, seven firework attacks, three assaults and one incident in which a weapon was brandished.

There were eight reports of ‘aggressive behaviour’ and 29 of verbal abuse.

Kirklees firefighters only reported three incidents – two of verbal abuse and one assault.

The figures, revealed in a report to the Fire and Rescue Authority which monitors the work of the service, were up almost a quarter on the same period of 2009.

The report said: “There is a danger that the frequency and severity of the 75 attacks, out of 37,378 attendances, may seem insignificant.

“The chief fire officer has re-emphasised that one attack is too many and that every assistance and encouragement will be given to the police to bring offenders to court.”
