A SURVEY has revealed that screen legend Audrey Hepburn - once engaged to Huddersfield-born Lord Hanson - is still a beauty icon for women today.

A large majority of 3,000 British women questioned in a survey said they preferred Hepburn's classic look compared to those of her younger counterparts.

More than a decade after her death her beauty is timeless, says women's website iVillage.co.uk

It carried out the survey for The Vitality Show, an exhibition showcasing health and beauty, at London's Olympia next month.

Hepburn, who would have celebrated her 76th birthday in May, starred in a number of Hollywood's greatest films, including Breakfast at Tiffany's, Roman Holiday, My Fair Lady and Always.

She was renowned for her big brown eyes, elegant neckline, 20in waist and hourglass figure. She was the epitome of style and glamour since first hitting the screens in the 1950s.

She and the then James Hanson were engaged to be married - an announcement made in the Examiner.

But the romance faded and the businessman - later Lord Hanson - married American Geraldine Kaelin in 1959.

Hepburn was born in 1929 in the Belgian capital, Brussels. Her father was a wealthy English banker and her mother a Dutch baroness.

The film star died of cancer in 1993, aged 63, in Switzerland.

In 1990 she was voted one of the 50 most beautiful women in the world and in 1999 was crowned one of the American Films Institute's greatest legends.

Emma Helbert, The Vitality Show director, said: "I'm pleased to see that after so many years and the rise of such beautiful stars, Audrey Hepburn is still such an icon.

"With her combination of true natural beauty, strength and sprit, she is the perfect reflection of everything The Vitality Show represents.

"No doubt her elegance and beauty will live on for many more years to come."
