THE year is 1963, the day Friday, November 29 and the venue, Huddersfield’s ABC cinema.

The town welcomed pop sensations The Beatles on the day their fifth UK single I Want To Hold Your Hand hit the charts.

But were you there? If you were then what do you remember of that momentous date?

Author and former journalist Martin Creasy is working on a new book about the six UK tours of The Beatles between 1963 and the end of 1965.

He is interviewing musicians who toured with The Beatles, journalists who covered the shows, staff from the venues they played, the hotels where they stayed and fans who were lucky enough to be there in Market Street.

This was the day when Huddersfield actor Gorden Kaye interviewed them individually in their dressing room between the two houses.

Martin said: “I would very much like to hear from Examiner readers with a story to tell of when The Beatles came to town all those years ago.

“Imagine what it was like for those 1960s teenagers when The Beatles turned up in town to play their local cinema?”

Martin is the author of the book Legends On Tour – The Pop Package Tours Of The 1960s which came out in the autumn of 2007.

Legends is unusual in featuring fan memories alongside those of the 21 pop stars interviewed to paint a picture of what those early tours were like.

It includes dozens of previously unpublished photographs bringing those stories to life four decades ago during the days when smaller towns like Aldershot were on the rock ‘n‘ roll map alongside the big cities like London, Liverpool and Glasgow.
