AUTHOR and critic Will Self will be giving a one-off talk at the fourth annual Holmfirth Film Festival.

Self will be presenting an illustrated talk on his favourite films and his 2010 novel Walking To Hollywood as a highlight to the festival which includes 50 award-winning new and classic films.

The festival, which runs from May 17 to 24, features a talk by Holmfirth-born Hollywood film composer Richard Hartley, who co-wrote the score for The Rocky Horror Picture Show and last year’s cinema adaptation of Dickens’s Great Expectations.

Other highlights of the festival include holiday-gone-badly-wrong black comedy Sightseers, at the Picturedrome (May 17, 10pm), and Queen of the Sun, a documentary of the disappearance of bees, at Cricketers Arms, Deanhouse (May 19, 3pm).

There will also be a selection of short films at venues across Holmfirth on the Holmfirth Film Trail and a variety of films and documentaries at Holmfirth venues and – for the first time – at Penistone Paramount.

One of the venues will be a yurt – a tent used by Central Asian nomads – at the Cricketer’s Arms, Deanhouse.

Festival director Stephen Dorril said: “People like events to go along with film screenings and our Ladies Who Lunch, Film in Barn, Curry and Film at Massala Lounge, Holmfirth, and Film and Food at the new Cider Press Cafe in Deanhouse have all been attracting lots of interest.

“Given the current economic situation, we have tried to keep prices as low as possible – especially for children – and there are a number of special offers.

“'The festival has gained a good reputation locally, among funders and businesses.

“We have had support from Creative England, the British Film Institute, and Kirklees Arts in the Neighbourhood, and the festival has attracted regional interest for its innovative programming.

“We’re now taking it up a notch and hope to gain a national reputation for creating new audiences.”
