CONSUMER chiefs are warning householders in Huddersfield to be on the lookout for rogue traders offering green home improvements.

They are urged not to be taken in by doorstep sellers who are promising bogus grants for products to make their homes more energy efficient. Officers at west Yorkshire Trading Standards are making the plea after seeing a recent increase in consumer complaints.

People have reported receiving leaflets and cold calls from doorstep sellers offering grants towards double glazing and insulation.

These rogue traders are overcharging customers and implying that a Government grant will cover part of the costs, making them feel they are getting a bargain.

However, the grant doesn’t really exist and although it appears the work is being carried out at a reduced rate, customers are paying over the odds.

On some occasions traders have been invited into homes to carry out a survey or give a quote.

Householders have then been asked to sign a document, not realising that they are signing a contract to have the work carried out.

The consumer service advises people thinking of taking up a grant for home energy improvements to do so through a council-run scheme.

Graham Hebblethwaite, chief officer of West Yorkshire Trading Standards, said:

“Avoid making hasty decisions on the doorstep. If you are concerned about the legitimacy of a trader contact Consumer Direct on 08454 040506.”
