A MELTHAM taxi driver has been rewarded for the help he gives to disabled customers.

Robert Swain, who operates Sunny Heys Private Hire, was named taxi driver of the year by disabled passengers in Kirklees.

Kirklees Council's licensing department asked disabled passengers to nominate a driver and Mr Swain received the most votes.

He was also named joint operator of the year, along with Mount Taxis in Marsh.

Mr Swain was presented with his awards by Clr David Sheard, chairman of the council's licensing and safety committee.

It was the fourth time he has won the taxi driver of the year title.

It is the seventh time Mount Taxis have been named operators of the year.

The awards used to be presented at the Kirklees Day of Disabled People event, which was organised each September by a sub-group of Kirklees Disability Rights Network at the Deighton Centre.

However, the event - which raised awareness of disabilities - was not held this year.
