A SCHOOL is celebrating after receiving an award at a national ceremony.

Newsome High School was highly commended in the Youth Sport Trust’s innovation award category for using sport to ‘narrow the gap’ in attainment among its students.

The school was handed its award at the trust’s national ceremony, held at the Telford International Centre on February 10.

Newsome High School and Castle Hill Special School have been sharing a programme of sessions to develop life skills, self-esteem and confidence.

The schools introduced an accredited ‘Certificate in Life Skills’ course to support pupils with disabilities and learning needs.

As part of the sessions, students take part in weekly health and well-being through physical activity sessions.

Newsome High School specialises in sports and PE.

Alex Gilbert, director of specialism at Newsome High School, said: “This award is a great accolade for all the hard work of everyone involved. The impact that the programme has had has been amazing, not just in terms of empowering the young people involved, but also across the curriculum.”
