A SLAITHWAITE woman has received an Award of Merit for her outstanding service to scouting.

Gillian Howarth, 43, was presented with her award at a recent cub scout meeting in Marsden where she was honoured by the Huddersfield South West district commissioner, Bob Beck.

Group scout leader David Watkins said: It was a well deserved and earned award for Gillian as she has contributed immensely over the years in a number of respects.

Gillian has been cub leader since 1988 and for several years was the only leader. She is also team leader of the Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team the first female team leader in England and Wales and has held that position for the last five years.

Now in its 42nd year, the Holme Valley Team currently has 38 call-out members and 17 of them are casualty care certificate holders.
