IT’S the choir for anyone, of almost any age.

And Lindley Community Choir, which held its third practice this week, has one of Huddersfield’s most successful amateur choir leaders, Alison North, at its helm.

They will make their public bow next month in the Mrs Sunderland Music Festival.

Alison has directed Lindley Junior School Choir to huge success.

The school choir was named Children’s Choir of the Year 2012 at the Royal Festival Hall, in London, last year. They had become BBC Songs Of Praise Junior School Choir of the Year in 2008.

Now Lindley Community Choir is offering the community of Huddersfield the chance to sing different types of popular music with expert direction from Alison, who said: “I enjoy working with a variety of ages. It’s another string to my bow. I’ve only ever worked with children before.

“It’s flattering that people want me to direct their choir.

“A lot of parents have seen their children in the choir and fancied a go themselves and we’re getting some of the old choir members coming back.

“It’ll be lovely to sing on the town hall stage and after that it’s onwards and upwards.”

Choir committee member Serena Wigglesworth-Littlewood said: “It’s fantastic to have Alison as our director. We’ve seen her do amazing things with the children.

“It’s a fabulous experience just singing with other people. It’s an amazing feeling.”

The new choir, which was funded by Kirklees Council, is open to girls and boys and men and women from school to pensionable age.

The choir, which practices at Lindley Junior School every Monday from 5.45pm currently has more than 100 members but more are welcome.

Serena said: “We’d certainly welcome a few more people.

“We haven’t had to refuse anybody because their singing was terrible; I’m still in it!”

The choir will be making its debut at this year’s Mrs Sunderland Music Festival, at Huddersfield Town Hall, next month.

It will be performing in the new community choir category at Huddersfield’s oldest music festival.

And the singers will be playing another concert at the end of next month, at a venue which is yet to be confirmed.
