A MASKED axe-wielding gunman stole cash from a landlord’s wife after ambushing her in a pub car park.

Now police believe the robber was hanging around near the Armytage Arms on High Moor Lane in Clifton for up to an hour before he struck.

The victim – a woman in her 40s – had just got into her car when the gunman struck at 11.45am on Monday.

He smashed the driver's window with an axe before brandishing the gun and grabbing the bag of cash.

The gunman, who was wearing a bala-clava, escaped in an older version of a dark, soft-top Renault Megane or Saab.

Det Con Nick Clay from Calderdale CID said: "This was a horrendous ordeal for the lady. She was extremely shaken.

"We do think the suspect has specifically targeted this pub."

It is the latest in a string of raids on local pubs.

In August, four men burst into the Nags Head, Ainley Top, brandishing a handgun, and made off with cash.

In May, less than 400 yards from Monday's robbery, two men pounced on the landlord of the Black Horse Inn and stole £400.

In March, customers and staff in the Tipp Inn, Brighouse, were robbed.
