AND you thought we had problems because of the plan to take maternity services from Huddersfield to Halifax?

David and Pat Kirrane, from Thurstonland, have been taking their holidays in Portugal for 30 years and brought back an example of a parallel case which is causing perhaps even greater uproar.

There in the rural, farming area of Alentejo the suggestion is to take maternity services to the nearest major city of Badajoz - and that is in Spain!

Imagine the objections to Portuguese babies not even being born in their own country - even if it would give you two teams to support when the next World Cup comes along.

David even brought back with him a cartoon from the local paper, here suitably amended by him to local circumstances, with Halifax substituted for Badajoz and the traffic doubled to reflect our much more crowded roads.
