THE first baby born in Huddersfield in 2012 is little Leo van Leeuw.
He was delivered at 2.53am on New Year’s Day at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary’ birth centre.
He weighed in at a healthy 7lb 1oz.
Proud parents are 17-year-old Laura Gledhill and Jonathan van Leeuw, 18, who live on Wellington Street, Oakes, which is close to the hospital.
Leo arrived two days early after a few hours labour and is the couple’s first child. Laura and Jonathan, a stonemason, were joined by many members of their families during the day.
Laura said: “At the beginning the labour was hard, but it just got easier. I’m feeling pretty good now – very excited and happy.
“I’m looking forward to going home for some rest and spending time with Leo.
“I would like to thank the midwives, Emma and Carli, for everything. They have been so supportive.”
Laura was studying art and design before she had Leo and hopes to return to Kirklees College to complete the course.
Several other babies were born to Huddersfield mums on New Year’s Day, including a set of twins at Calderdale Royal Hospital.
