DEWSBURY people left stranded by bus cuts are now being provided with a new transport service.

Bus company Arriva cut its services on Westborough, Birkdale Road and Green Lane in the spring - leaving people without a transport link to the town centre or nearby supermarkets.

However, Metro - which co-ordinates public transport for West Yorkshire - is helping out with its AccessBus service.

The service focuses particularly on elderly or disabled passengers, who cannot manage the distance to alternative bus stops.

Passengers must register for AccessBus services, which run between 9am and 5.30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

They can then call Metro when they want to use the bus and it will call at their door to pick them up.

All AccessBus vehicles have ramped access or passenger lifts.

Metro chairman and Dewsbury councillor Karam Hussain said: "Since Arriva withdrew bus journeys in the area, because they didn't consider them profitable, I have been contacted by a number of people left high and dry.

"By reminding them about Metro's AccessBus, we will hopefully find a way for some of these people to get out and about."

Metro is scheduled to meet with Arriva this month to discuss poor reliability of buses in the area and reductions in services.

Mr Hussain said: "A combination of reductions and unreliability of buses that do run is simply unacceptable."
