THE Yorkshire Air Ambulance is to return to Sheffield.

The charity’s second helicopter will again be based at Sheffield City Airport, with the other remaining at Leeds-Bradford.

There were fears the helicopter could not be based at Sheffield because of cost implications.

But talks between representatives from the air ambulance, South Yorkshire Police and Sheffield Business Park led to an agreement to have the facilities provided at no extra cost to the charity.

Chief Supt Richard Wilson, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “We are delighted the air ambulance is coming back to Sheffield and we look forward to working with them.”

Air ambulance chairman Peter Sunderland said: “Our thanks go to all the parties who have facilitated meetings and discussions to ensure a speedy, satisfactory and positive outcome to enable the continuation of our operations from a base in Sheffield.”

While the second helicopter will be based in Sheffield it was not acquired for the exclusive use of South Yorkshire.

It will be used as needed for all the people of Yorkshire, a population of 5m spread over 6,000 square miles.
