THOUSANDS of war veterans have been given the chance to revisit places full of memories, thanks to lottery-funded schemes.

The Home Front Recall and Heroes Return schemes - launched last year - are aimed at celebrating the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

And Victory in Europe Day on May 8, along with Victory In Japan Day on August 15, will see more than 4,400 people travel overseas.

The schemes consist of a selection of commemoration trips and events that will involve 25,000 people nationwide.

So far, 2,000 people in the Yorkshire and Humberside area - including several from the Huddersfield district - have received sponsorship.

They have had the chance to return to war fronts and remember those lost.

A lottery spokeswoman said

that so far £37.3m had been dedicated nationally to the schemes.

Deadlines for applications have been extended. Applications will now be considered until May 31.

"I would ask everyone who knows a veteran to consider an application," the spokeswoman added.
