A HUGE roar of appreciation went up at The John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday when marathon man Alan Boothroyd entered the arena ahead of Town’s Championship clash with Peterborough.

Town fans generously applauded the amazing 52-year-ol, who is half way through running a 1,000-mile charity challenge.

In an astonishing feat of stamina he is running the equivalent of two marathons a day for 20 consecutive days en route from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

Alan, of Lascelles Hall, is aiming to raise £50,000 for Town’s Keep It Up campaign which splits funds between the club’s Academy and Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Town fan Andrew Robinson, of Longwood, said: “There was a very loud and supportive reaction for Alan when he completed his lap of honour.

“Everyone is very impressed by what he is doing. It’s amazing.”

His partner, Lorraine Kiernan, 51, said: “It was smashing. We had a couple of collection tins at the Canalside training base when Alan stopped off and raised £529 to add to the £10,000 we’ve already got.

“Alan was quite emotional on Saturday night – a lot of people had been cheering him en route to the ground, but it is up to me to keep him strong.”

A special massage machine has been delivered to his team to keep him in tip-top condition for the rest of his run which sees him make for Penrith today.

Lorraine added: “I’m dead excited about the machine, it will be a great help.”
