A BUSINESS leader has welcomed plans to bring disc parking to a popular tourist town.

Kirklees Council’s Holme Valley South Area Committee will consider introducing the system in Holmfirth at a meeting next week.

The scheme would be similar to the one in Harrogate.

Any motorist who collects a free clock disc can park free in designated zones for periods ranging from five minutes in some areas to three hours in others.

They put the disc in their front window, setting the clock to show their time of arrival. Parking is free, providing the motorist doesn’t overstay.

Holme Valley Business Association president Caroline Anstey – whose family used to live in Harrogate – supports bringing the system to Holmfirth.

She said: “One of the problems we have with parking at Crown Bottom is that some drivers don’t have a 20p piece on them.

“So they either have to go and get change or risk not paying. It’s a nuisance.

“But in Harrogate, once you’ve picked up your disc from the post office or newsagents, that’s it.

“You just pull it out when you want to park.”

As with Harrogate, Ms Anstey said the designated time could vary.

She said: “In a popular spot, such as outside a bank or post office, it could be 10 minutes, while on a quieter stretch of road it might be an hour.”

Ms Anstey, who owns the Imagine toy shop on Norridge Bottom, added: “I think disc parking would be good for customers and shopkeepers.”

The area committee’s meeting is at Holmbridge Parish Hall on Tuesday, September 18, starting at 7pm.
