A GROUP which has members in Kirklees has won an award for its work in fighting wildlife crime.

The National Federation of Badger Groups has won the Partner of the Year Award, presented by the Partnership for Action Against Wildlife Crime.

It was presented by environment minister Elliot Morley at London Zoo.

Dr Elaine King, the federation's chief executive, said the award recognised the hard work of thousands of volunteers who valued and protected their local wildlife.

"This award is a credit to more than 80 badger groups who work in partnership with the police, RSPCA and other organisations to protect badgers from illegal persecution," she said.

Kirklees Badger Protection Group was formed in 1988 and has about 60 members.

Secretary Hazel Park said the federation was a small group, with members from all the local volunteer groups who helped out.

She added that it was proud to have received the award.
