WHAT do crisp packets, carrier bags and old copies of the Examiner have in common?

They have all been used to create outfits for a fashion show.

More than 50 students from Huddersfield Technical College are preparing to hit the catwalk to showcase their creations tomorrow.

The students, who are on the City and Guilds creative studies course, will model work they have produced during their fashion, millinery and stitched textiles courses.

Highlights of the show will include the "more flash than cash" section, featuring customised charity shop clothing, and Carmen Mir- anda-inspired carnival clothing made from recycled materials.

Art teacher Christine Hughes is pleased with the wild and wonderful creations her class has come up with.

They took Carmen Miranda as their main theme - a Brazilian actress, who rose to fame in 1940s' Hollywood.

She was known for her outlandish costumes and bizarre fruit-laden hats.

Christine came up with the idea because she loved Carmen's wonderfully flamboyant look.

She said: "Her outfits always amazed me and this was a great idea for a theme.

"The students have come up with some amazing creations, using some unusual materials.

"Three students decided to use paper to make outfits inspired by the Examiner! They decided to smock, pleat, fold and sew their old copies of the newspaper to create outfits.

"Other outfits are made from things such as crisp packets, packaging and carrier bags.

"I was interested in the idea of using recycled material, because it is a shame to throw away such beautiful packaging.

"You can do so much with the material, and it is also a way of recycling.

"It is very exciting to explore the potential of these fabrics - you can come up with some lovely results.

"The students enjoyed the work a lot."

Some of her students dyed and customised T-shirts.

The fashion show is run by the college every year, and students have the option to participate as part of their course project work.

Linda Savage, senior co-ordinator of creative studies, said: "The show represents the culmination of a year's hard work for the students, and provides a great opportunity to showcase their work."

In this year's show a wide range of designs will be on display from coats to hats for all occasions.

Most designers will be modelling their own creations.

* The show will be staged in the college's Highfields Theatre at the School of Art, Design and Performing Arts at 7.30pm tomorrow.
