Battle has officially commenced in the fight for your votes.

Local elections will take place on Thursday, May 5, alongside elections for the West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC).

The full list of who is standing for which seats on Kirklees Council has now been published and candidates are out canvassing for votes.

New faces have emerged alongside a number of former councillors trying to get back into the fold.

This year’s election is also notable for the large number of high-profile existing councillors who are trying to stay in post.

And residents of Kirklees could see the balance of power shift if opinion polling predictions come true.

Pollsters, Britain Elects, last week predicted a nationwide loss of 150 Labour seats, with the Conservatives, Lib Dem and UKIP taking an equal share of the spoils.

In Kirklees the council is currently run by a minority Labour administration who have 34 of the 69 seats.

Labour needs just one more seat to take overall control, but with a total of 12 of its seats up for grabs, a swing the other way could potentially see a new coalition or even full Conservative control.

In the other parties, four Tory, four Lib Dem, two Green and one independent seats are being contested.

Some of the councillors at threat of losing their seats include three cabinet members, Labour councillors Graham Turner, Shabir Pandor and Steve Hall.

Clr Turner, the cabinet member for resources, has overseen millions of pounds of cuts over the past four years and is the only Labour councillor in the whole of the ‘south Kirklees’ area incorporating the Denby Dale, Kirkburton and Holme Valley wards.

Councillor Graham Turner

The Green Party in Kirklees has just four councillors but with two up for re-election its presence could be halved overnight.

Leader, Clr Andrew Cooper, is bidding to retain the Newsome seat he has held since 1999, while Kirkburton Green, Clr Robert Barraclough is also hoping to stay on the council.

Long-standing Conservative and former cabinet member, Clr Martyn Bolt, is fighting for his Mirfield seat while former Mayor, Lib Dem Clr David Ridgway is defending his Colne Valley seat.

In Cleckheaton, leader of Kirklees Council between 2000 to 2006 and Lib Dem life peer in the House of Lords, Baroness Kath Pinnock, is bidding to retain her council seat.

The results of the election will be published on Friday, May 6.
