THEY have danced together for the past five years.

Now a young dancing duo from Huddersfield have made their bow in their first professional production.

Ballerinas Maddie Lawton and Maddie Denton, both 11, are dancing in the English Youth Ballet’s version of The Nutcracker.

After a successful audition in March the two Maddies, who attend the Huddersfield School of Theatre Dance, Armitage Bridge, have been performing alongside professional dancers and some of the North’s greatest young talents.

The production, based on Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite, opened yesterday at the Victoria Theatre, Halifax, and continues with another performance today.

Maddie Lawton, of Holmfirth, and Maddie Denton, of Honley, have trained at the Huddersfield school for five years and have danced at Honley Players’ pantomimes.

Maddies Lawton and Denton, who attend Netherthong Primary School and Honley Junior School respectively, are playing ‘Snowflakes’ in the production featuring youngsters from primary to high school age.

Maddie Lawton’s mother Julie said: “We’re delighted they both got in.

“It’s quite a tough audition. They did well to get in.

“They’ve been going since May for lessons and practices. So it’s quite hard going doing eight weekends with six-hour sessions.

“They’re both really happy to be in it. I’m looking forward to seeing them. It all looks very professional.

“Quite a few friends are going to watch them so it should be quite nice.”
