A BAN on mobile phone masts within 100 metres of schools is set to be rejected in Calderdale.

The council's cabinet asked last month for the restriction to be considered.

But a new report says the move is likely to fall foul of Government guidelines on masts.

One planning authority - Wigan - was told a ban could not be justified.

Calderdale Council's planning committee will discuss the issue on Tuesday.

Leading councillors said they wanted a ban on masts near schools and other buildings where children are present because of health fears.

But the council's chief planning officer Jim Metcalf says in a report that appeals by phone companies are likely to be successful because of the Government guidelines.
