A BANK is cutting opening times at one of its Huddersfield branches.

The Lloyds TSB branch at Marsh will only open between 10am to 3pm on Mondays and Fridays.

It means the bank will be closed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

The change takes effect from next Friday.

Marsh resident Margaret Rose said the move would hit elderly people who had arranged for their pensions to be paid into bank accounts.

Mrs Rose, who chairs Oakes Baptist Over-50s' Club, urged people to revert to getting their pensions paid at the post office.

A Lloyds TSB spokesman said the decision had been taken because the branch was used by few customers.

Also, a lack of technology meant transactions had to be processed at the main Westgate branch in Huddersfield.

Staff would be redeployed on days when the branch was shut, he added.

The spokesman said: "We realise it will cause inconvenience for some people, but the branch will still be open two days a week."

He said the Milnsbridge branch would extend its opening hours to help compensate for the changes at Marsh.

The Milnsbridge branch will open from 9am to 4.30pm, except on Thursdays, when it will open at 10am.

The Yorkshire Bank has just announced that its Slaithwaite branch will close in the new year.

The closure is part of a cost-cutting programme to axe 40 under-performing branches.
