GOLCAR woman Barbara Townsend has swapped her shoulder- length hairdo for a cropped style - all in the name of charity.

Barbara, 49, had her hair shaved down to a number three grade at the Junction Inn in Golcar.

She was sponsored by pub regulars, friends and local businesses for the stunt and has raised around £1,000.

She plans to put the money towards either a breast cancer charity or Huddersfield Royal Infirmary's oncology unit.

Cancer is a cause close to Barbara's heart.

Her sister-in-law has just been diagnosed with breast cancer and her former neighbour was diagnosed with the same problem in June.

Barbara said: "I said to her in jest that if she lost her hair I would shave mine off. She wouldn't want me to do it just for her, but now my sister-in-law has breast cancer so it is a cause close to home.

"I was very apprehensive. I've never had short hair, it's been long for years!"

Barbara added: "Everyone in the village has been great. I'm really impressed and overwhelmed by their support."

Also supporting Barbara's efforts was her husband Alan, who was surprised by his wife's daring idea.

He said: "She's never done anything like this before. It's certainly different."
