TWO boys went for a joyride on a barge – but their joy didn’t last long when the police turned up.

The Cowlersley youngsters aged 12 and 14 spotted the maintenance barge moored on Huddersfield Narrow Canal in Milnsbridge at 3.30pm yesterday.

They set it adrift, jumped aboard and then used a plank of wood to punt the barge along the canal.

Their journey was interrupted when police arrived, chased and caught them.

Both were arrested for taking a barge without the owner’s consent.

The 12-year-old was later released on bail until May 10. The 14-year-old was given a reprimand.
