Government minister Baroness Sayeeda Warsi will be in Huddersfield next month to take part in Kirklees Interfaith Week.

The minister for faith and communities will take part in a debate at Huddersfield University – one of several events organised for the week, which runs from Sunday, November 17, to Saturday, November 23.

Faith centres, schools, voluntary and statutory organisations and residents from across the district will take part.

The week aims to strengthen good interfaith relations and increase awareness of the different and distinct faith communities in Kirklees.

It also aims to build on the contribution which people of various faiths make to their neighbourhoods and to wider society – and to increase understanding between people of religious and non-religious beliefs.

The celebrations, organised by Batley-based Kirklees Faiths Forum, include a Focus on Faith seminar staged in partnership with Huddersfield University and featuring Baroness Warsi.

The event, chaired by the Bishop of Pontefract, Tony Robinson, will be held at 6pm on Friday, November 22, at the university’s business school.

The Kirklees Faith Forum annual meeting will also be held during the week, when the guest speaker will be Jonathan Mitchell, head teacher at Thornhill Community Academy.

The meeting will be held at 6pm on Monday, November 18, at Dewsbury Town Hall.

In addition, “hands-on-faith” workshops will be held in Huddersfield with activities which include the opportunity to experience a mock Jewish wedding and a guided tour of a “labyrinth”.

Fakhara Rehman, of Kirklees Faiths Forum, said: “It is with great pleasure and excitement that we are welcoming Kirklees Interfaith Week to Kirklees once again.

“The week is jam-packed with activity; and though exhausting, it is the most satisfying week in the Kirklees Faiths Forum calendar.

“We meet so many friendly, warm and generous people throughout the week who bring with them a passion for the betterment of their communities which crosses over differences in culture and faith. We hope you will join us to make this year’s Kirklees Interfaith Week the best yet!”

All Kirklees Interfaith Week events are free, but booking is essential to avoid disappointment. Visit www.kirkleesfaithsforum.org.uk for full details or ring 01924 326425.
