BASIL Smith is hoping to join his wife on Kirklees Council.

Mr Smith is standing for the Conservatives in Holme Valley North at this year’s elections on May 5.

His wife Beryl holds one of the three Kirklees seats in the area.

Mr Smith spelt out his priorities yesterday.

“I will fight to preserve every square metre of green belt land in Brockholes, Honley and Meltham,” he said.

“I will work hard to ensure every school in the ward has enough places to meet the demand of its local children.

“I shall support bus services in the rural areas and fight any proposals to reduce these routes.

“I will also try to encourage co-ordinated activities for young people across the three villages.”

The New Mill man added: “I will campaign to protect our two local libraries in Honley and Meltham and fight to maintain and enhance the level of service we receive and not accept any reduction in what is provided.”

Mr Smith is trying to win the seat held by Clr David Woodhead of the Lib Dems.
