VISITORS to the National Coal Mining Museum, near Grange Moor, will be given a chance to learn the art of basketmaking.

The museum is hosting a one-day basketmaking workshop on November 11.

Basketmaking -practised for thousands of years across the world - played a major part in coalmining before the birth of conveyor belts and engines.

Two hundred years ago coal was carried in baskets known as corves.

Anyone attending the workshop will make a willow basket with help from tutor Caroline Smith.

Those attending need to bring a stone weighing 4lbs, a sharp knife and a pair of secateurs.

The course costs £40 and all materials and refreshments are provided.
