COUNCILLORS will review the licence of a nightclub where a girl was allegedly given a date rape drug.

The 17-year-old was rushed to Dewsbury District Hospital after drinking a poisonous substance – possibly GHB – at Mungo’s nightclub in Batley on January 23.

Kirklees Council will review the club’s licence on Wednesday.

The three-strong panel could modify, suspend or revoke the licence at the hearing.

West Yorkshire Police have alleged a string of offences – including assault, theft and a serious sexual assault – have taken place at the Bradford Road club in the last eight months.

Licensing officer Pc Richard Woodhead wrote: “The above crimes are a catalogue indicating extreme bad management practices along with a complete lack of supervision.”

But the designated premises supervisor Jason Hardy yesterday defended Mungo’s.

He told the Examiner: “We have wrist-bands showing people who have been ID’d, we have metal detectors and female door staff.

“I have a good relationship with the council’s licensing department and I can’t believe it’s got to this stage.

“It seems unfair that the police have gone straight for the jugular but I’m fully confident going into this review.”

The panel will consider the matter at Huddersfield Town Hall from 1.30pm on Wednesday.
