A MAN planning to create a travellers' site in Kirkburton has vowed to fight on after a planning defeat.

Richard Clegg has been told his application for a site off Springfield Lane is not suitable.

But he said he intended to appeal to the Department of the Environment over the decision by Kirklees Council planners.

Mr Clegg has twice applied for permission to use the small site to house up to 15 caravans. But he has said he would not mind if it was limited to 10.

He also said fears that it would cause traffic problems were unfounded.

"We are aiming it at the ecological and environmental campaigners, who tend to travel the country," said Mr Clegg.

"They arrive in an area and stay for a while. Traffic in and out of the site would be negligible.

"We consider we have put forward a very fair case and I am disappointed."
