THE owners of about 5,000 horses in Kirklees are being reminded to `Be safe and be seen' when they ride or lead the animals on local roads in the dark winter months.

There are about 10 reported accidents a day nationally involving horse-riders.

High-visibility gear for both horse and rider is essential.

Kirklees Road Safety Unit says that the minimum amount of high- visibility clothing that should be worn includes a fluorescent or reflective coat or tabard for the rider and four fluorescent or reflective leg bands for the horse.

The unit also recommends lights for both riding and leading horses after lighting up time.
