BED and mattress manufacturers in Kirklees are wide awake to safety after an inspection blitz.

Thirty small firms in Batley and Dewsbury were targeted by the Health and Safety Executive.

Each company was visited by HSE officers to offer information and advice on reducing accident rates.

The campaign highlighted problems for workers lifting bulky items incorrectly, repetitive strain injuries for staff operating sewing machines and dangers from storing highly-flammable plastic and foam packaging materials in work areas.

Most of the firms are family businesses without designated health and safety managers. They also operate in old mills with restricted space and uneven floors.

HSE inspector Kirsty Townend, who led the campaign, said: "We have successfully delivered some important messages to a group of small, hard-to-reach businesses that in the past have lacked knowledge and understanding of the health and safety issues in their industry."

Inspectors had tackled urgent problems at some of the firms and established contacts which would pay dividends in terms of the future health and safety of the workforce.

The campaign was part of the HSE's Better At Work initiative.
