IT would have put a crunch in his kebab if he had not spotted it amongst the pitta in the nick of time.

Dalton man David Bandey, 37, was shocked to discover a beetle in his mixed chicken and lamb kebab from Kirkheaton Spice.

He told the Examiner: “I had ordered a kebab special which has mixed chicken and lamb fried in a sauce with salad.

“I was about half way through it when I saw what at first I thought was a kind of bean.

“I rooted it out and it was then that I saw the legs.

“Luckily I spotted it before I got near it.

“It was revolting.

“One wonders what else was in there. It was quite weird.

“It was definitely dead. The meat is fried so I think it must have been in with that.”

Mr Bandey was so disgusted he drove back to the Moorside Road take-away to complain to staff.

He added: “They gave me a full refund as my wife couldn’t eat her food because she felt sick at what I had found.

“They offered me more food but I didn’t want to risk it.

“They also wanted to take the food with the beetle in but I have kept it and I have been in touch with Kirklees Council’s Environmental Health.”

Mr Bandey said he had been going to the take-away for about four years but although the food is nice he won’t be going back.

A Kirklees Council spokesman said: “A complaint has been received and we have begun an investigation.”

The Environmental Services department confirmed the premises had been inspected after the complaint and no evidence of pests were found.

The spokesman said the beetle has been sent away for tests.

The restaurant was rated by Kirklees Council’s Environmental Health Team Scores on The Doors scheme back in February last year as a two star offering.

A spokesman from Kirkheaton Spice said: “We have just had a full health inspection this afternoon lasting about 45 minutes.

“The inspector told us that there was nothing to worry about and that they were perfectly happy with the premises.”
