BELLY dancers raised hundreds of pounds for charity at the weekend.

Dozens of dancers participated in the party – known as a hafla – at Tristan Dance Studio in Lockwood on Saturday evening, raising more than £600 for Kirkwood Hospice.

Organiser Ann Wear said: “It was an excellent event and really well-attended with more than 80 people there.”

Some 42 dancers from Huddersfield, Halifax, Bradford and Leeds took part in the hafla.

Ann said: “In Egypt it’s an event for women only where they can dance for their own enjoyment. But over here there’s a lot of men who come along as well.

“We had 15 dances including two where everyone was encouraged to join in.”

The hafla raised more than £600 for Kirkwood Hospice through ticket sales and sponsorship. Ann said: “I have had relatives in the hospice and I think it’s a really worthwhile cause to support.”

Ann, who has been belly dancing for eight years, runs classes at Tristan Dance Studio in Park Valley Mills every Monday and Tuesday.

She believes it’s the kind of exercise which anyone can enjoy.

She added: “It doesn’t matter if you have ailments or are overweight or older. I have a 23-year-old in my beginners’ class and a woman of 73 in my intermediate class. It’s good fun and good exercise.”

However, men are reluctant to join in.

Ann said: “They’re still a little bit nervous about it. I think they’re put off by their British reserve.”
