CONFUSION over the benefits system is prevent pensioners claiming cash, says a charity.

The announcement from Age Concern came as the charity launched the next phase in its year-long Your Rights benefits.

Age Concern says up to £2.5bn is left unclaimed each year.

More than six out of 10 pensioners in Yorkshire are put off claiming by the complex system, the highest percentage in the country.

Some 47% find means-testing too intrusive and more than half are discouraged by complicated forms.

A third of eligible pensioners are failing to claim Pension Credit four years after its launch.

Age Concern is urging the Government to make it easier for older people to claim by introducing a single claim-line for all means-tested benefits.

The charity hopes the Government will automatically pay those entitled and provide more help in applying.

Age Concern is also urging older people to contact their nearest branch of the charity for advice.
