CARNIVAL organisers said the credit crunch was to blame after they were forced to cancel a fundraising event because of poor ticket sales.

The Berry Brow Carnival fundraising committee organised a fundraising disco and auction that was due to take place this month.

The top auction prize was a copy of the autographs of all the athletes who had held the world record for running the mile from 1937 to 2000.

It had been donated by Huddersfield man Derek Ibbotson, who broke the record in 1957.

But the committee has taken the decision to scrap the event after selling only a handful of tickets.

The print will now be auctioned online.

Publicity officer Carol Waters said: “Unfortunately, despite as much publicity as we could get, we haven’t sold many tickets.

“We have called it off and are going to put the print of the autographs on ebay.”
