Student Lucy Clews will sit down with her family to celebrate Christmas at their Huddersfield home.

But while the rest of her family tuck into turkey, roast potatoes and all the trimmings, 19-year-old Lucy will sip a glass of water.

She is planning to fast not feast on Christmas Day, to highlight world hunger with a staggering 800m people going hungry each day

Lucy is aiming to raise money for food redistribution charity FareShare with her efforts.

Lucy, of Berry Brow, is a student at Lancaster University and is giving up all food on December 25, including her Christmas dinner and all the trimmings, to raise awareness of people going hungry over the festive season and the amount that is wasted.

She came up with the idea after finding out that hunger is still so high even though there is enough food to feed the world’s population. She was also surprised to learn that one third of all food that is produced is never eaten which inspired her to raise awareness and money.

Lucy said: “I have been fundraising before and recently I have been thinking about doing something to raise money and awareness of people going hungry especially at Christmas. I wanted to do something different that will inspire people to give and think about the issue of hunger.

If you're not fasting, here are tips from people in Huddersfield on how to produce a top Christmas dinner.

“Food wastage seems ridiculous with a third of all food produced never being consumed. FareShare ensures that good food is put to good use, rather than wasted. This campaign does not aim to prevent hunger in a particular way - it’s purpose is simply to raise awareness about the severity of hunger in our world, today”.

FareShare redistributes surplus food that would otherwise go to waste to over 1,700 local charities across the UK. These local charities and community projects feed over 82,000 people every day in breakfast clubs, homeless hostels, lunch clubs, women’s refuge centres and drop in centres for people recovering from addiction.

Caley Eldred, director of fundraising at FareShare said: “Christmas dinner and all its trimmings is one of the highlights of Christmas Day. What Lucy is doing is a great support for the vulnerable people in need that FareShare’s charity members”.
