YOUNG mum Cathy Cahill was shocked to discover the yoghurt she had given to her toddler daughter could be almost THREE YEARS out of date.

But it turns out that the numbers on the carton of Muller Corner was the time the contents were packed, and not the use-by date.

Cathy, of Paddock, read the Best Before date as January 2, 2009.

But the company and Tesco, who sold the yoghurt, have insisted it is not the sell-by date but the time it was packed and should read 20:09, as in the 24-hour clock. The yoghurt was good until January 2, 2012.

Cathy bought the cartons from the Tesco Express store in Westbourne Road, Marsh, and spotted the date when she fed it to her 20-month-old daughter Phoebe.

Her mum, Helen Heaton, took the carton back to the shop and spotted others on a shelf with the same printed details.

Helen said: “Cathy was horrified, as was I, and the store manager was also shocked.

“But Tesco have got back to me and said it was the time it was packed and not the year, which makes it all very confusing.”

Muller declined to comment.
